Garfield Gini-Newman is associate professor with the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning at OISE/University of Toronto and senior national consultant with The Critical Thinking Consortium. His primary areas of research involve the pedagogy of critical thinking and ways to embedd critical thinking in classrooms from kindergarten to graduate school. His related interest is in the area of effective assessment practice.


Garfield's focus in the field of assessment is how to build powerful curriculae grounded in the effective use of both formative and summative assessment as well as how to effectively assess for thinking. 

Garfield was a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Excellence in Teaching History and has been nominated twice nominated for the Excellence in Initial Teacher Education Award (2005 and 2006) for his work in the pre-service program at OISE. He is the author and editor of several books on critical thinking, the history of inquiry and its role in education.

Meet the Panelists

Teresa Belisle is Director of Learning Research and Development at the International School of Prague. Fascinated with the complexity of learning, change, and remaining relevant.

Laura Gini-Newman  is a recently retired educator with 25 years of experience working as a classroom teacher, resource teacher, coach and instructional co-ordinator. She is also the math consultant with The Critical Thinking Consortium woking with students, teachers and leaders to become better critical thinkers in mathematics and other subject areas across Canada, USA, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe and Asia.  She has published and co-authored textbooks, papers and learning resources in philosophy, history, mathematics, and Indigenous education. prior to her career in teaching, Laura worked as an economist and accountant. She has taught at both the University of Toronto and York University. She is also a professionally trained facilitator and co-founder of Flourisco.

Thomas (TJ) Merritt  has worked in secondary schools since 1989. His professional experiences range from Coach to Teacher to Middle School Principal and Professional Developer. He's back in the classroom teaching Individuals & Societies and Theory of Knowledge at the American School of Warsaw. Passionate about teaching and learning, he's currently focusing on developing and maintaining strategies in critical thinking that are used daily with all of his high school students. He's found that these strategies aren't limited to particular classes but can be used in classrooms, on field trips and the Volleyball Court.

Dr. Robert Sims  Dr. Robert Sims, educated at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada for his B.A., B.Ed., and M.Ed and through Touro University (Trident) in California for his Ph.D., has been working with his wife Cindy in international education for over 25 years. Beginning in his home country of Canada where he taught Grade 8 at Mentor College, he then
went on to teach Middle and High School at Colegio Bolivar in Cali, Colombia and Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The next 5 years found him as the Secondary School Principal for Bandung International School, during which time his two daughters were born. From there he was back to Cali for 5 years as the Middle School Principal and then to Manizales, Colombia where he was the Director of Colegio Granadino for 10 years, also serving as the President of the Association of Colombian and Caribbean Schools and as the Board
President for the regional Tri-Association with over a decade as a lead evaluator for SACS-AdvancED accreditation teams. Since 2017 he is the Director for the International School of Krakow.
With a passion for Architecture in Education, School Culture, 21st Century Education reforms, and Data Informed School Improvement (and yes, it is intentional that Data Driven was avoided) he has presented at multiple conferences and continues to research and pursue the ever elusive “What’s next” in education and learning.
